When the iphone is out of cell signal for a period of time (overnight), the iphone appears to poll to check for a new signal from the cell at longer and longer intervals. This is good in general, as constantly polling the cell tower would very quickly deplete the battery.
However, when moving back into an area with cell coverage (which in my case just means moving outside), the amount of time before the phone re-connects can be very long. The exception to this is that if the main button is pressed to wake the phone up, the phone immediately performs a cell tower check and reconnects.
If you get into a car however without pressing the button, you can be driving around with no phone signal for quite awhile. This is even the case if you have the phone paired to the car via bluetooth.
In this instance, the pairing is completed, and the phone continues to not check the cell tower for quite sometime – Unless the button is pressed as you approach the car (which does resolve the problem, however most inconvenient).
So until Apple make the cell search start when the bluetooth pairs (which would probably be the easiest fix) dont forget to wake up the iphone before setting off.
This happens everyday to me
, i must try and remember to press that button.
[Update 22nd September 2009]
So, 10 months on, Version 3 of the O.S. and guess what, still the same problem, i love the iPhone, but need the connectivity reliability of a main stream brand. After all, this is supposed to be a mobile telephone first and foremost
Scoopz has finally had some success, although not for everybody.
In a new blog entry Scoopz has documented what needs to be done: http://blog.scoopz.com/2008/10/11/fix-for-iphone-and-bmw-idrive-address-book-not-synchronising. It seems to work for many people but not all, it hasn’t worked for me.
In summary, he creates 2000 contacts and add them to the iPhone, this then allows the BMW to synchronise the contacts list.
Hopefully, BMW/Apple will come up with a correct solution soon, my iPhone stability seems to have got worse with the 2.1 firmware release. Although it hasn’t really been useful since purchase.
I have now had the 2.1 firmware for around a week.
I have been keeping a close look at reception issues, as I had issues before, and according to apple, one of the main fixes was to improve the 3G reception.
On the whole, I think the 3G reception is marginally better, although its hard to say as I don’t get a 3G signal in my main locations.
The other noticeable difference has been the 2G signal. Before 2.1 it was near impossible for me to get a signal at home, now – since 2.1 – I can get the occasional signal in various parts of the house. It is still not usable at home, but I can get the odd text message through the phone now – assuming I leave it in one of the magic locations.
Talking to o2 about this in August, they will be building a new transmitter in about 9 months time, so hopefully then I will have a decent signal. I need to either wait or switch back to the T-Mobile or Orange which do supply a usable signal. And a point to note, I’m not in the back of beyond. Just terrain issues seem to be the problem. But if T-Mobile and Orange can provide suitable signals its a shame o2 can not, especially in the year 2008.
Did the 2.1 improve my life, not really, still waiting on too many key components of functionality.
Battery life is better tho, so at least I can use the iPhone as an iTouch.
Roll on April 2009, hopefully by then we will have a new transmitter, and maybe even a new firmware update that allows the phones bluetooth to work correctly with my car again.
Well, 2.1 firmware has now been released.
So, upgraded and moved to my car.
Re-paired the phone with the car, and it still does not work.
So still continuously drops connection to the car, and does not populate the address book.
Disappointed? Yep

Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 (18 Months On)

I got my first Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 around 18 months ago.
I would go to say, it is the best mouse I have ever had (even given the problems I have had with it – more below). It immediately resolved what I classed as early RSI in my wrist, much more comfortable to use than my previous Explorer mouse.
Yes it is small, but very usable and doubles up for its presentation functions which I do use from time to time.
I have had problems with it working with my Dell M1300, there appears to be a connectivity issue where regularly the mouse slows down from its normal movement pace. This is incredibly annoying but only occurs when using the built in Bluetooth Stack, not when using the dongle that came with the mouse. The problem can always be corrected by adjusting the line of sight to the machine.
This is a strange issue, as you can use the mouse Meters away from the machine and it works fine, but when you are 30cms away from the pc it can flareup and cause its anoying effect. But still, I love it – i’ve tried to find a solution to this but now given up.
Even with what is a really annoying problem, I still decided to purchase a 2nd mouse for my MAC.
I swapped the mice over, so the new one was on my PC (my main machine).
So… 18 months on, the next problem is now starting to annoy me.
At the side of the mice is a rubber grip. Unfortunately the grip seems what I can only describe as disolve. Its very hard to describe, so heres a picture showing the problem:

The top one is the most used. I am right handed, so the left hand side is much worse than the right.
Not a lot I can do about that – if anyone knows of a solution to this or the bluetooth connectivity problem, please do let me know.
BUT – I would still purchase the mice again, even though the mice are not cheap.
Hopefully, Microsoft will bring out an updated version of this model that does not have the same problem.
