Crunchgear has the details on what the 2.0.2 fix did for the 3G iPhone, as discussed by AT&T.
In summary: the iPhone was requesting too much power from the cell tower, causing the cell tower to terminate the connection! The 2.0.2 fix reduces the power requested by the iPhone.

I missed this earlier in the week, but Business Week have also got an article regarding the Communications chip that is used by the iphone. They suggest that the chip contains faulty software, but this should be able to be corrected by a suitable update. With the release of the iPhone 3G Apple released Version 2.0.0 of their firmware for the phones.
Unfortunately, it appears that in doing this, they broke the Bluetooth software integration with Cars.
The BMW appears to be suffering more than others, but this is not limited to just BMW cars. Some BMW’s do work, but they tend to be just released cars, e.g. March 2008 onwards. But it is not this clear cut.
After many comments to and from Apple/BMW, according to scoopz, it looks like Apple will be releasing another software update in September to resolve this.
Feedback from various people regarding this issue can be found here http://blog.scoopz.com/2008/07/11/iphone-20-update-breaks-bmw-idrive-contactaddress-book-syncing/ if you have this problem, why not add your 2c.
Lets hope this gets fixed sooner than later, maybe they may even address the 3G signal problem at the same time.
An interesting article in the register today, suggests that the iphone 3G has a fault to do with the 3g capability of the phone.
The “signal” that is sent out for the 3g service – appears to be several DB below minimum levels, questioning how the phone got approved. The original phones for approval may have had different software which allowed them to pass. This we should all hope for, at least if it is software – there is a chance Apple can resolve this. If it is a hardware fault, I really can’t see Apple recalling the phones for replacement – but then a failure of this significance in the very phone that was sold as the “twice as fast” NEW 3G iPhone will no doubt be a huge blow to Apple.
This will be an interesting one to keep track of over the next few weeks.
